Matthew Garber (March 25, 1956 – June 13, 1977) was a British actor best known for his role as Michael Banks in the 1964 Disney film, Mary Poppins.
He also appeared in two other Disney films: The Three Lives of Thomasina (1963) and The Gnome-Mobile (1967). Although he received critical acclaim for his performances, particularly in Mary Poppins, he decided to leave acting after The Gnome-Mobile.
Tragically, Matthew Garber contracted Hepatitis while traveling in India in 1976. He returned to London, but his condition worsened. He died in June 1977, at the young age of 21, from Pancreatitis, a complication stemming from the hepatitis. His remains were cremated, and the location of his ashes is unknown. Despite his short career and premature death, Matthew Garber is fondly remembered for his charming performances in classic Disney films.
